About The Author

My name is Steven Heise and I am a historian. It feels like I am writing some sort of alcoholics anonymous confession saying that. In some ways, that is the case. For the last thirty years of my life I have been addicted to history, and historical study. When I was younger I could not get enough when it came to books about wars -- especially the American Civil, and Second World War -- as I moved in to college my interest shifted more towards the Black Freedom Movement and the struggle for civil and human rights that many people fought for in the past. As I moved into my post-graduate work that interest gave way to what may be another phase of my historical infatuation (though I wrote a dissertation on the subject so I suspect it's not just a passing fancy) as I studied the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, and eventually earned a Doctorate from Clark University after writing a dissertation on the intellectual construction of pro- and anti-slavery thought in the early modern Atlantic World.

Now, I am an adjunct teaching classes wherever the administration is willing to hire me. It is not exactly the life I dreamed of when I was a young idealistic undergrad -- or, slightly less idealistic graduate student -- but it but I deeply enjoy the challenge of teaching and awakening in (some) students a joy for studying and thinking about the past.

I also have a wife, a child, and a small home in suburban Massachusetts.
